Pain varies from person to person and depends on the treatment area, as some parts of the body are more sensitive than others. Many compare the feeling to that of static electricity, a rubber band snapping and tingling. You may feel like you have a mild sunburn for 1 to 2 hours after your session.

Most clients find treatment very tolerable. For our more sensitive clients or for more sensitive treatment areas, we offer complimentary prescription-grade numbing cream which is extremely effective in pain reduction.

The good news? Laser hair removal hurts much less than waxing!

Laser hair removal is a procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light to remove unwanted hair. The light energy that comes from the laser is converted to heat in the hair follicle, resulting in thermal injury and damaging the follicle into a state of prolonged dormancy. Successfully damaged follicles are no longer able to produce new hairs.

The Alpha 808nm Diode Laser is clinically proven and FDA-approved, offering safe and effective treatments for all skin types with zero downtime.

For at least two weeks before treatment, follow these steps:

• Avoid any direct sun exposure or light from tanning beds to the area you will be treating.
• Cease use of retinoids.
• Stop taking antibiotics, as they increase your photosensitivity to the laser. We cannot perform treatment until 2 weeks after your last dose.
• For maximum results, refrain from bleaching, epilating, plucking, tweezing, and waxing completely. You may shave as often as you like before, during, and after treatment.

In the week leading up to treatment, follow these steps:

• Avoid sunless tanner for at least one week prior.
• If you get cold sores or have a history of HSV – 1 or HSV – 2 and are treating those areas, we ask that you take an antiviral medication starting 24 – 48 hours before your treatment to prevent an outbreak and continuing for 3 – 5 days after.

The day of your treatment, follow these steps:

• Take a shower and clean the treatment area, making sure to remove dirt and oil from the skin.
• Please come as cleanly shaven as possible to your appointment. You can shave the day of as long as it does not cause any skin irritation. If it does, please shave 1-2 days before your appointment with a clean razor.
• Avoid applying any skincare products, including lotions, oils, and deodorants after you cleanse and before treatment. Do not apply makeup to any areas you wish to treat.

We recommend avoiding makeup, deodorant, and any harsh acne products until the day following treatment. Sun exposure, vigorous exercise, saunas, hot water, or anything that elevates your body temperature should be avoided the day of treatment.

Be sure to apply UV sun protection to any exposed areas.

There is no downtime after laser hair removal, and patients can continue the majority of their normal activities after a treatment session. While some temporary redness and swelling may be evident in the treatment area, this typically resolves itself within an hour or two.

Laser hair removal is not a one-size-fits-all treatment, and an individual may need anywhere between 6 and 12 sessions to reach the desired result.

Multiple sessions are necessary because hair growth and loss naturally occur in a cycle, and laser treatment only works on hair follicles in the new-growth stage known as the anagen phase. There are many other factors to consider, such as skin tone, hair color, density of hair, genetic background, skin conditions, health conditions, supplements, medications, hormones, and how well your skin tolerates the type of laser used.

With each session, we do our very best to gauge the number of sessions we anticipate you will need. However, please remember that the precise number is impossible to predict. We can only see what’s on the surface of the skin and not what is underneath. 

The goal of laser hair removal is permanent hair reduction, and most patients are hair-free for years after a full course of treatment. The laser targets and destroys your current hair follicles; however, new hair follicles can develop over time due to hormonal changes. 

Some clients like to do a maintenance session on an annual basis, some require a touch up session every 4-5 years, and some clients are lucky enough to never grow hair in the treatment area again. The longevity of laser hair removal does fluctuate from one person to the next. We do offer touch up sessions to address this!

The most common area we see hair grow back is on the face, particularly the upper lip, chin, and neck. We especially see this in women of menopausal age where testosterone levels may increase leading to some hair regrowth. Hair can also grow back on the body; however, typically when it grows back, it is much finer and sparser than it was before the initial treatment. 

When laser hair removal is performed with a safe and effective laser by an experienced and knowledgeable practitioner, side effects are rare. Potential adverse reactions can include hyperpigmentation (darkening of skin) or a histamine reaction (allergic reaction to the heat). However, both conditions are temporary and can be easily treated.
